Hi My idea on survival knives is this you want to have a knife to use as a knife. I have lit a thousand camp fires and never used a knife. Mostly in the forest you learn to find dry wood and use that it breaks up easy enough. Trying to use a knife to get fire wood is a good way to hurt your self and brake a good knife. Trying to use a knife to make a shelter is a desperation measure that mostly is doomed from the start. Survival is about using your brains a knife is for opening stuff protection cutting food. The important consideration is are you going to be prepared to carry this knife at all times. If you are how heavy can it be big knives are heavy. A more advanced idea would be a good camp axe and this is a tool that is very dangerous to use. A camp axe also a great weapon and you could actually build a small shelter with it in time.

The best idea for a survival knife is one that you can use and have the strength to handle safely. I would advise to stick with a five inch blade. A six or seven inch blade is getting heavy and over kill for the amount of use you can get out of it. The Ka-Bar looks like a perfect size and is claimed to be a real work horse. The Ka-Bar is also very inexpensive and not hard to replace.
