Moose Hunting How and When to Find Bull Moose
Moose Hunting
Moose hunting is rather easy they are not to smart until they start evading you. But if you can figure there weak points and bad habits it becomes easy . The trick I use is to wait until late season. If I get a limited entry draw especially want it late season. What you need to know is they like to lay down and sleep in the sun most of the afternoon. They do this on an open hill side above their feeding spot. I learned this trick after we shot our bull at eleven o’clock five seasons in a row.
Bedded moose
Moose hunting what we were doing is going out in prime time at daylight and missing the bulls moving down into the feed areas or up into them. Moose they like willow patches but not all types and not at all times. But we were coming out of the back end of the logging road at about eleven o’clock and we would catch one on the road. This is the best place to catch them because you do not want to pack a load of moose meat very far.
Moose just out of bed
So what you need to find is moose tracks crossing the road a lot in and out of one cut block or clearing look for a place where the moose have to cross the road to get to the block or clearing . This is not to hard most logging roads follow a creak or river and the feed areas are along the water ways most times. The moose will not cross in the same spot very many times so there will be a few different places they will have been crossing. Just find this spot and set up early and wait if the sun is warm they will walk right to you and if it is really cold and the sun is shining they will come out to the opening to bed down. The odd thing is the moose will cross at the same time but not always the same place.
I have worked this plan to success many times . The scouting for this set up is to go up on the opening on cloudy days when the moose do not come out to sun and find there bedding spots and see what kind of places they like but there is not much pattern to it. Mostly you want to get an idea of how long your shots are going to be and how to get in line for each bedding spot . There bedding spot us usually where they can see a good distance to ward the noise of the road and get up in the sun with an escape route near them but not always.
Moose Hunting
Just make sure you have a good hunting knife with you and a bit of a saw to cut it up to get the animal out. Having a high quality skinning knife is really handy on a big animal. If you are winter camping I have some great tips and products you can get to make the trip way more comfortable. Having a good sleep in a warm bed and decent meals is not that hard if you set your moose hunting camp up correct.
